Stochastic Network Calculus – An Overview and Outlook

Abstract:
Stochastic network calculus is a theory for performance guarantee analysis of Internet networks. Originated in early 1990s, stochastic network calculus has its foundation on the min-plus convolution and max-plus convolution queueing principles. Although challenging, it has shown tremendous potential in dealing with queueing type problems encountered in Internet networks. By focusing on bounds, stochastic network calculus compliments the classical queueing theory.
This talk will give an overview of stochastic network calculus, introduce some of the results achieved by Jiang's group, and present an outlook of the area.

Bio:
Yuming Jiang is a full Professor in the Department of Telematics and Centre for Quantifiable Quality of Service in Communication Systems (Q2S), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway. He received his B.S. degree from Peking University in 1988, and Ph.D. degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2001. From 1996 to 1997, he worked with Motorola. He was a Research Engineer with NUS from 1999 to 2001. From 2001 to 2003, he was with the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), Singapore as a Member of Technical Staff / Research Scientist. He joined NTNU in 2004. He visited Northwestern University, USA from 2009 to 2010. He is recipient of a fellowship from the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM). He was Co-Chair of IEEE Globecom2005— General Conference Symposium, TPC Co-Chair of 67th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC) 2008, and General/TPC Co-Chair of International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems (ISWCS) 2007-2010.

His research interests are the provision, analysis and management of quality of service guarantees in communication networks. In the area of network calculus, his focus has been on developing models and investigating their basic properties for stochastic network calculus (snetcal), and recently also on applying snetcal to performance analysis of wireless networks. He has published more than 100 papers in internationally refereed journals and conferences, including ACM SIGCOMM. He is author of the book ”Stochastic Network Calculus”.
