题  目:Flash-Memory Storage Systems: Reliability and Performance

Abstract:
Flash memory has become a popular alternative for storage systems. Unfortunately, it suffers from performance and reliability problems, due to its inherent characteristics. In this talk, we will first provide a brief introduction to the manipulation concerns of flash memory. We will then present solutions to resolve the address mapping issue and address the key challenges. The talk is concluded by key technologies in reliability enhancement of flash-memory storage systems, that have emerged as a critical issue for modern flash chips.

Bio:
Tei-Wei Kuo received the B.S.E. degree in Computer Science and Information Engineering from National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1986. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin in 1990 and 1994, respectively. He is currently a Distinguished Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Taiwan University. Prof. Kuo also serves as an independent board director of the Genesys Logic and the MStar Semiconductor, leading companies in IC designs for display, smartphones, wireless communication, USB, and flash-memory controllers. He served as the Chairman of his department from August 2005 to July 2008. Between Feb 2006 and July 2008, he also served as a Deputy Dean of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, National Taiwan University.

Prof. Kuo is an IEEE Fellow. He has served in the editorial board of many journals, including the Journal of Real-Time Systems and IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. He was the Program Chair and General Chair of the IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (RTSS) in 2007 and 2008, respectively, where RTSS is the flagship conference in real-time systems. Prof. Kuo receives many research and teaching awards including the 2004 Ten Young Outstanding Persons Award of Taiwan and the Distinguished Research Award from the Taiwan National Science Council. His research interests include embedded systems, real-time task scheduling, real-time operating systems, flash-memory storage systems, and real-time database systems. He has over 180 technical papers published or been accepted in international journals and conferences and more than 6 patents in USA and Taiwan on the designs of flash-memory storage systems.
