IBM 2010 Global Technology Outlook and Smarter Planet Initiative

Abstract:
The Global Technology Outlook (GTO) is IBM Research's vision of the future for information technology (IT) and its impact on industries that use IT. This annual exercise highlights emerging software, hardware, and services technology trends that are expected to significantly impact the IT sector in the next 3-7 years. In particular, the GTO identifies technologies that may be disruptive to an existing business, have the potential to create new opportunity, and can provide new business value to our customers. The 2010 GTO focuses on six topics that span Services and Software as well as Systems and Technology. In this talk, I will provide an overview of IBM Research and share the findings in 2010 GTO. In particular, I will introduce IBM Smarter Planet Initiative and focus on one of the six GTO chapters: Orchestrating Smarter Planet. Furthermore, I will present the state of art IBM research in the area of microelectronics and nano-technology for 15nm and beyond. At the end, I will summarize and wrap up with a description of IBM University Programs.

About the speaker:
Dr. Qiqing (Christine) Ouyang is currently the Program Director for Innovation at IBM Corporation. She is also an IBM Research Technical Advocate for Aerospace and Defense Industry. In 2008-2009, She was the manager of 15 nm and 11 nm Front-End-of-Line (FEOL) at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, responsible for defining the device structure for future technology nodes. Her team has recently demonstrated high performance Si nanowire FETs with wire diameter down 3 nm. In 2007, she was the manager of 22 nm FEOL and the finFET program lead. The team fabricated the world smallest finFET SRAM cell of 0.128 mm2 and the world smallest planar SRAM cell of 0.1mm2. Dr. Ouyang joined IBM as a Research Staff Member in 2000. Her early work includes device design for low power, high speed RF and optical devices and advanced CMOS integration.
Dr. Ouyang is an IEEE Senior Member. She was listed in Marquis Who's Who in America 2009, and the recipient of IBM Outstanding Technical Achievement Award in 2006. In addition to more than 80 scientific publications in major journals and conferences, Dr. Ouyang holds 30 US patents and 20 pending US patents. She has received 14 IBM Patent Achievement Awards.
Dr. Ouyang received two B.S. degrees (double-major) with honors, one in Electrical Engineering, and the other in Economics and Management from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China; the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana; and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas, Austin, Texas.
