A 1V 2.3μW Biomedical Signal Acquisition Chip

Abstract:
Patients and aged people may greatly benefit from the wearable devices that can monitor health conditions and provide timely information for necessary actions. It is desirable for such devices to operate under a single battery so that its volume and weight could be reduced for the comfort of the users. On the other hand, in order to pick
up very weak biomedical signals, the devices also need to exhibit extremely low input referred noise. The simultaneous requirement of low power and low noise has posed a great challenge to the circuit designers.
In this talk, a 1V 2.3μW biomedical signal acquisition IC is presented. It consists of a low-noise OTA (LN-OTA) and an 11-bit ADC. A pseudo S/H circuit is incorporated in the LN-OTA and reduces the overall chip area and power consumption. The modified successive approximation ADC allows rail-rail input at low supply voltage. The Chip is
fabricated in a standard 0.35μm CMOS process and can operate from 0.8–1.5V. The measured total input referred noise of the LN-OTA at a 1V supply is 2.7μVrms, integrated from 0.05Hz to 245Hz. The ADC nonlinearity errors are less than 2LSB. The power consumptions of the LN-OTA and entire acquisition IC are 0.33 and 2.3μW, respectively.

Bio:
许永平1994 年获得澳大利亚新南威尔大学(UNSW)电气工程系博士学位。他自1978 到1987 年间曾在青岛半导体研究所先后任集成电路设计工程师,开发科副科长和所长。1993 至1995 年,他在澳大利亚新南威尔大学与GEC Marconi 公司的合作项目中负责设计sigma-delta 模数转换器。1996 年他在南澳大学任讲师。自1998年至今,他在新加坡国立大学任副教授。
许永平的研究领域为模拟,混合信号和射频集成电路系统的设计。目前着重于无线通信, 生物电子和微机械方面的应用。他在传感器百科全书( Sensor Encyclopaedia)和超宽带电路,结构和系统(Ultra Wideband: Circuits, Architectures and Systems)书中发表了两个章节,有6 项已批准和8 项正在审批中的专利。他在国际杂志和会议上发表了60 多篇 论文,其中包括集成电路领域中的著名杂志和会议, 如国际电气电子工程师协会(IEEE)的JSSC, TCAS, ISSCC, A-SSCC, VLSI 和CICC. 他是2007 年IEEE DAC/ISSCC 学生设计竞赛获奖者之一。他被授予2004 新加坡国立大学的优秀讲师的称号。他是2002 IEEE 亚太电路与系统会议(APCCAS)的主席和2007 IEEE 射频集成技术研讨会(RFIT)的技术委员会主席。许永平是IEEE 的高级会员。
