Abstract:

Ferrites are prevalent in a wide range of applications including rf, microwave, and mm-wave electronics, spintronics, magnetic storage, and biomedical cancer remediation therapies. In this seminar I will introduce ferrites from a chemical and physical perspective followed by a discussion of state-of-the-technology processing and characterization. I will focus much of the discussion on the design, processing, and characterization of ferrites aimed at next generation microwave device applications.

Biography:

Vincent Harris is the W. Lincoln Smith Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Northeastern University. Prior to holding this position, he was Head of the Materials Physics Branch at the Naval Research Laboratory. As branch head his responsibilities included the technical oversight of ~40 scientists and the management of a budget in excess of ~9 M$/yr. He presently maintains an active research program as principal investigator, while providing technical oversight and leadership to several students and research staff. His research interests include materials design and the study of processing, structure and magnetism in a wide range of materials. He has published more than 150 technical articles in peer-reviewed journals, including book chapters and review articles on topical areas of nanotechnology, magnetism and magnetic materials. In addition, he holds 5 patents, and has presented more than 150 papers at national and international meetings. His research has been the subject of national press releases from the NRL and the Brookhaven National Laboratory; technology transfer 'spot-light items' at the National Synchrotron Light Source; and numerous awards for technical performance from the NRL. In 2001, he established and assumed the position of Director of the NRL Synchrotron Radiation Consortium from 2001-2003. The NRL-SRC administers five National Synchrotron Light Source beamlines maintaining x-ray absorption and scattering facilities for use by NRL researchers, as well as researchers and scientists from universities and other government agencies. In 2004, he established and assumed the position of Director of the Center for Microwave and Magnetic Materials and Integrated Circuits (CM3IC). The Center is funded by the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Defense Advanced Research Program Agency, and the US Congress. The mission of this Center is to develop next generation microwave materials and device solutions for radar and wireless communication technologies. Vincent Harris is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and a member of the Materials Research Society, the American Vacuum Society, and the IEEE.
